While we are preparing to cover soccer UIL bi-district playoffs tonight, we got a pleasant surprise in the form of breaking news in Austin-area girls basketball.  One of our favorite coaches is headed to West Lake Hills.

Vickie Benson has been named head coach for the Westlake High School girls basketball program, announced Eanes ISD Athletic Director Callan Nokes today. Benson has served at the helm of the Bowie High School girls basketball program in Austin ISD where she spent 12 years as head basketball coach and classroom teacher. She led the Bulldogs to five consecutive basketball district championships and advanced to the 6A state playoffs 10 consecutive years. She marks more than 400 career victories and earned Coach of the Year honors from the Austin American-Statesman in 2014. Benson also worked as an assistant volleyball coach at Bowie and stepped in as head coach in 2013-14. Prior to Bowie, Benson coached basketball, track and volleyball at Hyde Park Baptist Schools in Austin, where she also served as the girls athletic director. She began her coaching and teaching career at McNeil High School in Round Rock ISD. Benson played basketball and graduated from Georgetown High School then excelled at Concordia University in Austin as a stellar shooting guard, three-year starter and captain. She holds a Bachelor of Secondary Education with a minor in Spanish from Concordia. Benson is married to Kacy Benson, the campus pastor at Bannockburn South. They have two sons, Coleton, who plays basketball at West Point and Tyton, a junior at Bowie. She replaces Katie Hensle, who left her coaching duties to spend more time with her family.
