iReporter Harrison Chang confirms Liberal Arts & Science Academy (LASA) Football has named Derrick Lewis their first UIL Varsity head football coach.  Lewis, a former San Diego State standout and NFL member of the Houston Texans (with stints with Saints and Bucs), secures his first career Varsity head coaching position with this move.

The man known affectionately as ‘D-Lew The Mechanic’ has been working with athletes in the Austin-area for the past few years.  Earlier in the offseason, Lewis was on tap to become McNeil's wide receiver coach, but chose to lead the Raptors instead.

Pictured here, Lewis in his Houston Texans days.

LASA went 3-7 overall in their final non-UIL season, defeating Austin Achieve (48-6), Eastside Early College (49-16) and Navarro High (42-33) ending the season on a two-game win streak.

Congratulations to ‘D-Lew’ and his family on a terrific career move, and good luck in Year One.  The Raptors are slated to open the 2022 season vs St. Andrews (August 26th at Nelson Field) with their district debut on September 16th vs Eastside Early College (Burger Athletic Complex).
