Halfway mark of the season for many of our Austin-area teams.

FLX 5 Week 5 Picks

CAMERON PARKER (11-9)

 Connally v Elgin- Elgin

Cedar Park v East View- Anderson

Buda Johnson v Anderson- Anderson

Westlake v Lake Travis- Westlake

Bowie v Dripping Springs- Dripping Springs

DEREK COHEN (12-8)

 Connally v Elgin- Elgin

Cedar Park v East View- Cedar Park

Buda Johnson v Anderson- Anderson

Westlake v Lake Travis- Westlake

Bowie v Dripping Springs- Dripping Springs

Elgin vs. Connally- Elgin has been playing lights out all season and I think they keep it rolling this week vs. an 0-4 Connally team. Cedar Park vs. East View- Cedar Park gets back on track after starting 0-3 and brutal non district schedule, they should get their first win this week. Anderson vs. Buda Johnson- Anderson’s physicality should be enough to stop a Jesse Medina’less’ Buda Jags program. Westlake vs. LT- Since the Chaps are at home, and have fewer injuries than the Cavs do I think this pushes them over the edge to win comfortably. Drip vs. Bowie -This will be a closer game than expected but I think with Koch back, Novosad and his receivers have the edge over Kenyon and Barnes.

   NOLAN HOGAN (13-7)

 Connally v Elgin- Elgin

Cedar Park v East View- Cedar Park

Buda Johnson v Anderson- Buda Johnson

Westlake v Lake Travis- Westlake

Bowie v Dripping Springs- Dripping Springs

District 26-6A matchups are all over this FLX5 list, and for good reason. With their district being the biggest in the area, with 9, getting an early win against a solid opponent is key if they want to put their names in the hat for the playoffs. The battle of the Lakes will have all eyes, but my key matchup this week is Dripping Springs v Bowie. Drip has proven to be a legit 6A squad after a week 1 win over Vandegrift, and two dominant wins following to push to 3-0. With that being said, Connor Kenyon and the bulldogs haven’t gone anywhere since last season, also starting 3-0. Max Barnes has taken over the RB1 role after splitting carry’s with Camacho last season, and he’s stepped up big time as the leader for that offense. I see Anderson holding off Buda Johnson in a tight game. The Trojan defense, led by Ivy Webb, seems to be a force, and a challenge for some offenses. Elgin is a completely different team than we saw last season, clearly. Connally has struggled this year. Have had opportunities for wins with leads in the second half. Until they close out a game I’m gonna ride with Elgin.

SNUPE DANIEL (12-8)

 Connally v Elgin- Elgin
This may be the best Wildcats team since 2013.  The Cougars have shown flashes, but yet to secure their first W.  I see Clawson's Cats getting the dub at The Pfield. Elgin, -11

Cedar Park v East View- Cedar Park
Coach Quintero enters his 2nd district season as CP lead man.  Coach Michael Wall is in his first year of molding the Patriots program.  Both teams are full of underclassmen, lead by a handful of seniors.  With the Timberwolves being further along in their re-structure, I'll go with CP, big.  Cedar Park, -17.

Buda Johnson v Anderson- Anderson
This is low-key one of the most lit games on the Friday slate.  Its a virtual must-win for both.  The Jags got their first district W last week, and will rely on QB2 Carson McMullen ('24) to lead the way.  The Trojans have lost their two district games by a combined 4 points.  I think they wind up on the other side Friday.  Anderson, -1.

Westlake v Lake Travis- Lake Travis
Most will point at the QBs for this one (Brett Skinner vs Kadyn Leon).  Two junior signal callers who were thrust into their current roles unexpectedly.  This will come down to line play and special teams.  I feel this will be the most competitive BOTL since the Hudson Card dub in 2019.   LT has 2 losses, but both to powerhouse programs by a single possession.  You can argue this is Westlake's toughest opponent they have played this year.  Could the Cavs shock the world? I have Hunter Rioux becoming a hero.  Lake Travis, -1.

Bowie v Dripping Springs

Someone's "O' must go.  Both are unbeaten, only one will emerge unblemished.  Call me crazy.  Bowie, -3.

ZACH LUCERO (13-7)

Connally v Elgin- Elgin

Cedar Park v East View- Cedar Park

Buda Johnson v Anderson- Anderson

Westlake v Lake Travis- Westlake

Bowie v Dripping Springs- Bowie

I think Elgin continues to have a complete turn around season with a W over Connally. I was almost tempted to pick East View over CP in a battle of winless squads but I think the tradition and culture at cedar park won’t allow them to fall to 0-4. Then I think people are still sleep on Bowie but a W over drip will wake some people up if they can get it done
